Boger-Boenninghausen's repertory

Boenninghausen’s Characteristics and Repertory (called Boger-Boenninghausen's repertory in Mercurius) by C.M. Boger is a repertory based on the system of C.M. Boenninghausen used in the Therapeutic Pocketbook. This system, radically different from the system used by J.T. Kent and other homeopaths, was further perfected by C.M. Boger. He has enlarged the original Boenninghausen’s Therapeutic Pocketbook (from 1863 rubrics to 28.471 and from 77.858 remedy additions to 287.888) and he has in this way created a formidable repertory, that could be without any hesitation compared to the Homeopathic Repertory by J.T. Kent.

The main ideas behind the Boenninghausen’s system are, that:
- It is possible to generalize rubrics (e.g. the symptom Head, location, forehead contains all remedies that produce any kind of sensations in the forehead and the symptom Eyes, itching contain all remedies producing itching sensation in any part of eyes).
- Every rubric is composed of four basic elements:
  • Locality
  • Condition
  • Modality
  • Concomitant
Majority of rubrics in the BCR contain information about all of the basic elements and create a valuable source of information for modern homeopaths. The main drawback of Boenninghausen’s repertory is the fact, that as time went by, the Boenninghausen’s system was used only by minority of homeopaths and there were no additions to the BCR and the last edition of the BCR is from the year 1938. In order to increase the usability of the BCR, we have made many improvements to the contents and the structure of this repertory.

1. Modernization of the language

In order to bring the Boenninghausen’s Characteristics and Repertory (BCR) closer to modern users, we have updated the language of the repertory. Archaic terms were replaced with the modern ones and the result is a better usable repertory containing wealth of information written in a modern and more understandable language.

Original term New term
thro through
swelled swollen
caecal cecal
ileo caecal ileo-cecal
bellyache abdominal pain
haemorrhage hemorrhage
maidens girls
haemorrhoids hemorrhoids
humour humor
leucorrhoea leucorrhea
foods food
gonorrhoea gonorrhea
drafts draft
osteo-myelitis osteomyelitis
tumour tumor
citron lemon
dyspnoea dyspnea
amenorrhoea amenorrhea
fontanelles fontanels
oedema edema
fraenum frenum
haemetemesis hemetemesis
crampings cramps
vigour vigor
oesophagus esophagus
lithaemic lithemic
groupes groups
haematocele hematocele
naevus nevus
pyorrhoea pyorrhea

Examples of modified rubrics:
Original rubric New rubric
Cough, expectoration, yellow, citron yellow Cough, expectoration, yellow, lemon colored
Urine, phenomena, citron-yellow Urine, phenomena, yellow, lemon colored
Face, aggravation, lying, thereon Face, aggravation, lying, face on
Face, aggravation, lying, thereon, when not Face, aggravation, lying, on face, when not
Saliva, but feels dry Saliva, changed, increased, but feels dry

2. Structure of the repertory

In order to maximize the benefits of the structure of BCR, we have arranged the rubrics according to their meanings. We have arranged all rubrics according to whether they describe a location or a phenomena. In this way we have added a description of the type of the rubrics to all relevant rubrics. In this way, it is possible to exactly differentiate the type of rubric we are looking for (rubrics describing aggravation, amelioration, concomitant, location or phenomena).

Example of the structure changes:
Original rubric New rubric
Eyes, eyelids, in general Eyes, eyelids, location, in general
Eyes, eyelids, upper Eyes, eyelids, location, upper
Eyes, eyelids, adhering to balls Eyes, eyelids, phenomena, adhering to balls
Eyes, eyelids, agglutinated, left Eyes, eyelids, phenomena, agglutinated, left

Groups of rubrics therefore contain descriptors:
  • location
  • phenomena
  • aggravation
  • amelioration
  • concomitants
  • time

4. Changes to certain symptom groups
